Outdoor Living Trends 2027: The Patio as a Room
Americans are spending more of their evenings outside, and the patio is being designed accordingly: not as a place for a grill and a folding chair, but as an outdoor room with a floor, walls of planting, a ceiling of light, and furniture as comfortable as the sofa inside.
What are the outdoor living trends for 2027?
Six directions: the patio as a room, warm low lighting, natural and weather-proof materials, earthy colors, deep comfortable seating, and planting that softens hard surfaces. The same warmth that is changing interiors is moving outside.
The shift is easy to see in what people buy: outdoor sofas with real cushion depth, rugs made for rain, and lighting on a timer. A patio used to be furnished for lunch; it is now furnished for the two hours after dinner, which is when most of us are actually out there.

How do you make a patio feel like a room?
Give it the elements of a room: a rug to define the floor, something overhead (a pergola, an umbrella or string lights), planting as walls, and a focal point such as a fire bowl or a table. Enclosure is what makes an outdoor space feel comfortable.
The rug matters more than people expect. A flat-weave outdoor rug, large enough that the front legs of every seat sit on it, does the same work as a floor: it draws the edges of the room and tells you where the space ends. Without one, furniture on paving reads as furniture left outside.
What outdoor lighting is trending for 2027?
Warm, low and layered, like indoors: 2700K string lights, lanterns, low path lights and a few lamps made for outdoors. Bright floodlights and cool white LEDs are out; the goal is a soft glow that lets you still see the sky.
Three heights, as indoors: something overhead (string lights or a covered fixture), something at eye level (lanterns on the table), something at ankle height (path lights along the edge). One bright floodlight does the opposite job, it flattens the garden and kills the view of the sky.

What materials are in style for outdoor furniture?
Natural-looking and built for weather: teak, powder-coated aluminum in earthy colors, stone, concrete, and all-weather woven resin that looks like rattan. Real rattan and bamboo stay indoors; the woven look goes outside in synthetic fiber.
Read the label before the look. All-weather resin wicker gives you the woven texture with no care at all; teak needs oiling once a year if you want to keep it honey-colored, and nothing at all if you are happy with silver-gray. Powder-coated aluminum is the one that survives a coastal summer untouched.
What colors are trending outdoors?
Earthy colors that sit well with plants: olive, clay, terracotta, sand and warm stone. Behr's 2027 color, Grounded, a mossy olive, was chosen with indoor and outdoor use in mind.
Earthy colors also hide what a patio actually goes through: clay, olive and sand cushions do not show pollen, dust or a spilled glass the way white and pale gray do. Keep the brightest color for the planting, which changes through the season anyway.

Is deep seating trending outside too?
Yes. Outdoor sofas and lounge chairs are getting as deep and soft as indoor ones, with plenty of cushions. Daybeds and loungers turn the patio into a place for long evenings.
Look for a seat depth of 24 to 28 inches and cushions at least 4 inches thick, in quick-dry foam with a solution-dyed acrylic cover. That combination is the difference between a sofa you sink into after dinner and one that is still damp at eleven in the morning.
How do you keep the patio mood when evenings turn cold?
Bring it inside, next to the window that faces the patio: the same warm light, natural textures and deep seating. Designers treat the room behind the patio doors as the patio's winter half.
Natural bamboo stays indoors, which is exactly where it earns its place when the season turns. Our Woven Bamboo Floor Lamp by the patio doors throws its weave across the glass at night, and the Woven Bamboo Pendant Light over a table near the window keeps the feeling of dinner outside.
A fire bowl, a basket of throws by the door and a patio heater buy most of the country another six to eight weeks at each end of the season. The throws are the cheapest of the three and the one people reach for first.
A few last questions
What is the outdoor color trend for 2027? Earthy tones such as olive, clay and sand. Behr's 2027 color, Grounded, was designed for indoors and out.
Can rattan furniture go outside? Natural rattan should stay indoors or under a deep covered porch. Choose all-weather synthetic wicker for open patios.
What is the best lighting for a patio? Warm 2700K string lights and low lanterns, rated for outdoor use.
How do I make a small balcony feel like a room? Add an outdoor rug, lights overhead, two large planters and a small table.
What outdoor furniture material lasts longest? Teak, powder-coated aluminum and good all-weather wicker all last many seasons with basic care.
