Size & placement guide
The most common regret with decor bought online is "smaller than I expected", or bigger. Here are the real sizes of each piece, and where it looks its best.
The floor lamp
Shade: 23.6 in wide × 15.7 in high (60 × 40 cm).
Overall height: 55 in (140 cm).
- Beside a sofa. Stood next to a standard three-seat sofa, it reaches just above the backrest. Seated, the shade sits below your eye line, so you see the glow and never the bulb.
- In a reading corner. Place it slightly behind and to the side of the chair, so the light falls over your shoulder onto the page.
- Leave some wall. Keep it a hand or two away from the wall: the weave draws its pattern there, and that is half of the effect.
- Give it air. Allow about 12 in around the shade for it to breathe and to read as a piece rather than a crowd.
The pendant light
Shade: 31.5 in (80 cm) across.
Cord: 47 in (120 cm), adjustable.
- Over a dining table. Choose a table at least 48 in long or round. Hang the pendant so the bottom of the shade is about 30 to 36 in above the table top: low enough to feel intimate, high enough to see across the table.
- Over a walkway or in a living room. Keep the bottom of the shade at least 7 ft above the floor where people walk under it.
- Centre it on what it lights. Over a table, centre it on the table rather than on the room.
- Check your ceiling point. The pendant is hardwired to an existing ceiling fixture box. If there is none where you want it, an electrician can add one.
The vase
- On a table or a sideboard. Set it off-centre, beside the floor lamp or under the pendant, so the three pieces answer each other.
- Near a light source. Its open weave casts a lattice shadow of its own when a lamp shines through it.
- Fresh or dried. Fresh stems go in the glass liner with water; dried stems such as pampas or eucalyptus can stand in it dry all season.
Styling the three together
Designers rarely light a room with a single fixture. The pendant gives the room its overhead glow, the floor lamp a warm pool at the height of the sofa, and the vase brings the weave down to the table. Woven from the same bamboo in the same honey tone, they read as one choice rather than three. See the three-piece set.

Decorating advice, one room at a time
We are an interior decor house before we are a shop. Once a month we write to you about one room: how to light it, what to put where, and which of the season's decor directions are worth bringing home.
- One room per letter. The living room, the bedroom, the dining table, the reading corner.
- The season's decor directions, sorted for real homes rather than showrooms.
- Lighting advice you can use the same evening, with or without our pieces.
- First word when a new piece joins the collection.
