Pendant Light Over a Dining Table: Size, Height and How Many

A pendant over the dining table is the light people notice most in a home, and the one they most often get wrong. It ends up too high and floats near the ceiling, too small and looks lost, or too low and blocks the view across the table.

Three measurements settle it: the height, the width, and how many. Get these right and almost any style of pendant will look intentional.

How high should a pendant light hang over a dining table?

Hang it so the bottom of the shade is 30 to 36 inches above the table top. That works for a standard 8-foot ceiling. For every extra foot of ceiling height, raise the pendant about 3 inches. At that height the light stays close to the table, and people can still see each other across it.

Measure from the table top, not from the floor or the ceiling. Dining tables vary from 28 to 31 inches tall, so a height taken from the floor can be three inches out before you start.

31.5 inches across, above a six-seat table: a little over half the table's width, the proportion that reads as deliberate.

How big should a pendant light be over a dining table?

A single pendant should be about half to two-thirds the width of the table. For most tables, that means the shade is about 12 inches narrower than the table is wide, so it doesn't reach past the edges. A 42-inch-wide table suits a pendant of about 21 to 28 inches across.

Leave at least 6 inches between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table on each side. That gap is what keeps a large pendant from feeling like it is in the way when someone leans in.

Our Woven Bamboo Pendant Light is a statement size at 31.5 inches across. It is at its best over a round or square table of 48 inches or more, where it sits right in the range above.

How many pendant lights do you need over a dining table?

Use one pendant for a round or square table, and one to three for a rectangular table depending on its length. A good rule for rectangular tables: one large pendant up to about 6 feet long, two medium pendants from 6 to 8 feet, three small ones beyond 8 feet.

One for tables up to about 60 inches, two or three for anything longer. With two, space them evenly along the table and keep at least 24 to 30 inches between shades so they read as a pair rather than a collision.

Centered on the table, not on the room. The table is what you look at; a pendant that splits the difference looks like a mistake.

Should the pendant be centered on the table or the room?

Center it on the table. The pendant lights the table, so it should sit over the middle of the table, even if the table isn't in the middle of the room. A light that is centered on the room but off-center over the table looks like a mistake.

If the ceiling box is in the wrong place, a ceiling hook and a swag kit move the pendant across for a few dollars. Moving the box itself is an electrician's job and rarely worth it.

One 2700K bulb on a dimmer. The weave does the rest: the pattern on the ceiling is the light you actually notice.

What bulb is best for a dining room pendant?

A dimmable LED at 2700K warm white, about 800 lumens. 2700K makes food and skin look natural and warm. A dimmer matters more over a dining table than anywhere else in the home: bright for homework or a board game, low for dinner.

2700K, dimmable, and shielded if the shade is open: over a table you are looking across at the bulb, not up at it, so a visible filament at eye level is the one thing that will spoil an otherwise well-hung pendant.

A few last questions

How low can a pendant hang over a dining table? About 30 inches above the table top is the practical minimum. Any lower and it starts to block the view across the table.

Can one pendant light a large dining table? Yes, if it's big enough: about half to two-thirds of the table's width. For tables longer than about 6 feet, two pendants usually light the ends better.

How far should a pendant be from the edge of the table? Keep at least 6 inches between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table on each side.

Does a pendant over the dining table need to be hardwired? Most pendants are wired into a ceiling box by an electrician. Plug-in pendants exist and can be swagged to a hook, with the cord running to an outlet.

What size pendant goes over a 48-inch round table? Between 24 and 32 inches across. A woven pendant can go toward the top of that range.

Lighting the whole room, not just the table? Pair the pendant with the Woven Bamboo Floor Lamp and the Woven Bamboo Vase, woven in the same honey tone, or take all three as the 3-piece set.
